Word Salad RPG
A downloadable game for Windows and Android
A Simple RealTime Strategy RPG where you embark on an adventure with 3 units to defeat a boss at the deepest reaches of a forest. This game features a small range of move sets and swappable moves between each character alongside a small enemy variety each with their own strenghts and weaknesses
Guide to Mechanics & moves:
- The colored lines in front of your unit and the enemy are part of an aggro system. Albeit faulty at times, it is designed to telegraph upcoming enemy attacks and help the user better strategize and prepare for them. (They are very faulty, if it's more intuitive, just adopt a reaction based playstyle instead)
- Block move: inherent to all classes, the move drastically increases the unit's defense, helping offset incoming attacks for a couple seconds. If timed well, a "cling" will be heard when an enemy attack connects.
- Arrow type single target attacks alongside Damage over Time moves bypass an enemy's defense, helping deal full damage to specially tanky enemies such as big goblins.
- Splash attacks such as Fireball will not only target the unit you select, but also some of the adjacent while Area of Effect ones will target all units from the same team as the one you select.
Note: After finishing a run, there is a bug where trying to boot another one will mess up the loading level system. In that case, simply close and reopen the game.

Theme Interpretation: "I've never done this before"
- This was the first time for all of our members to take part in a game jam, so that was an interesting start. The idea was to first make a platforming-rpg hybrid though it later ended up being reduced in scope for a real time rpg inspired in FNAF world, but more like describing game mechanics to someone that had never seen them before and asking them to program them. It was very interesting making an rpg for the first time, since all my previous experience programming had been in small 2 month guided or 1 month nonguided games of genres such as shooters, platformers, racers and simulations but never rpgs. Moreover, object permanence across levels was something I had never actually dipped in and it proved to be a struggle whose aftermath is very visible in the final product. On the other hand, while sound effects were also something I had never gotten the chance to implement before, they proved to be something surprisingly painless and fun to implement. They really make the game pop and breath life into it.
- The concept creation and level design was offloaded to one member with no game dev experience, so it was very interesting to witness the breath of ideas and how they got better at brainstorming and assessing and idea's scope throughout the course of the game jam project.
- As for the ream artist, while he also had previous game dev and artist experience, making 16x16 pixel art with a medieval-fantasy theme for the first time proved to be a struggle at first due to having less space than normal to work with while also ensuring the characters retained special characteristics that allowed them to be recognized at a glance.
- As for the sfx and background assets research, it was offloaded to another member with no previous game dev experience. Despite starting from zero, they proved very capable at finding the correct assets that properly matched the game's aesthetics while keeping a uniform atmosphere.
It was a lot of fun to participate in a game jam for the first time, and we all hope you like the game at least a bit despite all its flaws.
